A Case For Change

Smaller and Poorer

Michigan has been growing at a slower rate than the average U.S. state for the past 40 years.

While our per capita income has been growing below the U.S. average for the past thirty years, the rate of decline has been dramatic over the past ten years. Michigan’s per capita income is now 13% below the national average.

Michigan ranks dead last in Gross Domestic Product growth since 2000. If Michigan’s GDP had grown at the rate of a Top Ten State, the difference would translate to $12,000 more for income for every Michigan citizen.
